2004 - The Hunting and Fishing Page

Total Harvested for the Week: 4

November 29th, 2004 - Deer Gun Season Starts! This year as years past, the hunt takes place on Lazy Mom's Ranch. The hunters are family, their relatives and invited guests. It is NOT open to the public. If you are family and am not sure if you are invited, please send your requests by email.

For overall information and pictures on hunting this year, you can visit the Department of Natural Resources - Wildlife division. For a quick link to the regulations and license info on hunting during the 2004 season in Ohio go here. In Coshocton County the limit this year is three deer (go to links to see regulations and specifics).

And finally, if you are a Hettinger, relative or guest hunter and would like to share your stories and/or pictures with us, please fill out the form below. You can use the "File Attachment" feature for your pictures (submit three pictures at one time!), or you can email me and we will discuss how you can get them on this site! Any state or country is welcome to participate, however the webmaster has final say on all inclusions. Thank You!

The following two submissions are from Renate Hettinger - wife of Lawrence Sr., both who are hosting the 2004 Hunt at Lazy Mom's Ranch.

"I just read in the newspaper tonight that the estimated deer population in OH is now 700,000. Wow. When we moved here 20 years ago it was about 400,000. No wonder there are so many car-deer accidents.

Also, during the 2002-2003 deer season, 11 scored over 200 in Ohio (Boone and Crockett Club or go to Buckeye Big Buck Club for scoring), where Pennsylvania has had only 5 deer over 200 all-time. The largest deer taken on the North American continent in 1999 was killed in Ohio, score 252. The first and third largest deer taken on the North American continent in 2000 were harvested in Ohio. The first place scoring deer in 2000 recorded was (score 304) in Green county; it is the largest archery-hunter killed deer ever. I would say, that is quite impressive!

Hunting season here on the farm is always exciting. It can be tiring too, holding down the kitchen and feeding 20 people at times, eating in shifts. It's like an open cafeteria. But it's also family togetherness. I wouldn't want to miss it."

"Good luck guys!" - Renate Hettinger, Nov. 30th, 2004

"When we first moved out here in 1986, Dean wanted to go deer hunting with his Dad, of course. He was only 14 1/2 then. Since deer hunting is big here in Ohio, a lot of boys go hunting and therefore miss school at least on opening day. The school let it be known, that anyone missing school without a doctors notice will have to make up the day on Saturday. Since I was sympathetic to his cause but didn't have a doctors notice I wrote this note and took it to school:

To the Office,
Dec.3rd,1986

Sorry that Dean was absent on Monday, 1st of Dec. (opening day) because of "Deer-fever". His father and him tried to cure it with 410 slugs. He took 3 shots on Monday, but wasn't cured and therefore had to stay home on Tuesday too. Although not completely well, we urged him to go back to school on Wednesday. He didn't want me to write this note for fear of having to attend classes on Saturday, the best day for him to get over his 'illness'. Possibly the make-up day could be postponed till a week from Saturday. :-)

Sincerely,

Renate Hettinger
(concerned but truthful mother)"

"Not so much about the hunting, but I want to thank the ladies for keeping us fed. Also a special thanks to Lawrence and his bread!! Little slow today, didn't mind the rain yesterday, but 40 mph sustained winds with 50 mph gusts this morning have kept us in. We're gonna get after it this afternoon. More later..."

Brent McKee, December 1st, 2004

"Nice job Lawrence, posting Deans picture; and I like the deer at the top of the page. Thanks for your contribution of a big pot of chili on Monday, with your famous German rye bread, and Pat's big pot of stew on Tuesday with more of the bread and Lawrence's out of this world bagels. Thanks for all your help. Everything was delicious and plenty of it. It made it easy for me. I always enjoy the stories the Hunters bring into our kitchen. There never seems to be a lack for any. Tonight there were only four of us for supper, and it was strangely quiet. :)"

"Good luck for the rest of the week."

Renate Hettinger, December 1st, 2004

"Wow! I thought he'd be bigger! It's hard to see a whole lot from directly above the deer. He has a really nice spread but lack of points will probably keep this one a skull mount....unless my wife has too many objections. Oh well....there's always next year."

"Hey Brent! I see you killed mom and her young son.....are you sure you got the whole family? You don't want one of the children growing to adulthood and having a vendetta against you! Hee Hee!"

Dean Hettinger, December 2nd, 2004

"I'm still looking for his father of course (see comment above from Dean). Hey Dean! I'm just curious. What did you do with the suicide note? The poor "antlerless" has had a rough go of it lately. Talk about "self-esteem" issues. Poor guy, walking around minding his own business, gets hit by a car, survives, loses his horns and part of a foot, girlfriends wouldn't talk to him anymore. No wonder he walked up to you to give up, then you shoot him in the butt...wow, talk about rough..." Editors note: Brent talks of the Antlerless Buck that Dean killed on Tuesday.
